Anna Colom - Fandango de las Indias

Anna Colom

The fandango originated in Portugal and Spain. It can be both sung and danced. The dance is an expression of passion, and the partners tease, challenge, and pursue each other with steps and gestures.  In Latin America the fandango is present in the cultures of Colombia, Brazil and Mexico, among others. In Spain, the fandango is a style that is common in various regions of Spain, such as Huelva, Malaga, Granada, and others.

The “Fandangos de las Indias” preserve the flamenco roots of the fandango of Huelva but is also impregnated with the flavor of the Huasteco son and the fandango of Veracruz (Mexico), is an attempt to highlight and pay homage to the link between both cultures.

Anna Colom is a multitalented Spanish vocalist and songwriter. Born in Barcelona (1985).  In the year 2023, Anna Colom launched her debut album, “Cayana,” to critical acclaim. The album pays homage to the roots of Flamenco by showcasing the traditional Flamenco repertoire, which has been heavily influenced by Iberian folk music traditions, Latin American music, and African rhythms. “Cayana” is a sensational embodiment of Colom’s musical journey, and her splendid performance is a testament to her passion and hard work.

FANDANGO DE LAS INDIAS  a song from the Album Cayana (2023)

(I have transcribed the song from Anna's singing with difficulty. Please be aware of a couple of gaps and possible mistakes). Any assistance is welcomed. Thank you.

Se volvieron a encontrar,

y al volver de una esquina.

Se volvieron a encontrar,

y todas las criaturas,

se pusieron a llorar.

Y es que el amor no tiene cura.

¡Ay! toito aquel que dice,

y enseña al que le ha dolió,

y ya …

que esta triste el corazón mío.

….

Cuando iba camino al cielo,

una mano la agarró.

queriendo decir un te quiero,

el techo se le encogió.

Y esa penita en el alma,

y en la garganta le quedó.

Que una pena es una pena,

 y no entiende de razón.

Cuando suena en un fandango,

habla el pueblo y su dolor.

Cuando suena en un fandango,

habla un sólo corazón.

¡Ay! habla el pueblo y su dolor.

¡Ay!  habla un solo corazón.

¡Ay!  hablar el pueblo y su dolor.
