Like the Chacona, described as an “American mulatto” by Miguel de Cervantes (La Ilustre Fregona), the great majority of musical forms which evolved after the “discovery” and the conquest of the New World retain that extraordinary mixture of Hispanic and Creole elements influenced by indigenous and African traditions. A new selection of “Sones y Folías Criollas” for singing and dancing has been recorded in conjunction with Montserrat Figueras and the instrumentalists and vocalists of La Capella Reial de Catalunya and Hespèrion XXI, as well as a number of guest musicians from Argentina, Venezuela, Colombia and Mexico, including Tembembe Ensamble Continuo.

A Follia (or La Follia is an energetic, traditional Portuguese folk  dance from the late 15th century that later transformed into a stately Baroque musical theme. The word folia means "empty-headed," "madness," or "wild amusement" in Portuguese. 

Early 15th- and 16th-century descriptions picture loud, fast, and tumultuous outdoor celebrations where dancers—sometimes carrying men dressed as women on their shoulders—spun until they seemed frantic or mad but by the mid-17th century, the chaotic folk dance moved into royal European courts in Spain, France, and Italy. The wild movements turned into a measured, elegant dance—similar to a slow passacaglia—built around a recognizable repeating bass line and chord pattern.

Bernarda de Utrera (Bernarda Jiménez Peña) was born in Utrera, province of Seville, March 3, 1927 – ibid., October 28, 2009) was an Andalusian gypsy flamenco singer.

Fernanda de Utrera  (Fernanda Jiménez Peña) was born in Utrera, province of Seville, February 9, 1923 – ibid., August 24, 2006), was an Andalusian gypsy flamenco singer from Andalusia.

 Bernarda Jiménez Peña, daughter of José el de Aurora and Chacha Inés, and granddaughter of the flamenco singer Pinini, who, despite not being a professional singer, enjoyed fame in Utrera. According to Bernarda herself, both she and her sister Fernanda were born singers, having received artistic influence from their environment from childhood, as they were born into a Gypsy family. From a young age, numerous Gypsy flamenco artists would come to the Jiménez Peña home to hear them sing.
